Janice -- this episode of "American Greed" on CNBC -- Episode 6 is worth watching -- they used the documents and video of the Greater Ministries International scammers casing an island to set up their own country, "import 30 people from the Philippines" for labor to set up their island nation headquarters, their plans to flee the country, etc...
There was a manifest of items they would need to operate their island nation -- including automatic weapons, night vision goggles and handguns with silencers... it was a long list of shocking details.
These people scammed $500 million hiding behind the cross of Jesus. The morons videotaped every one of their pitches -- this is how the Feds made the case -- the cons argued that they were soliciting donations in the legal contract when people handed over the money -- but all the verbal pitches they videotaped were about doubling your money in 17 months.
I had heard of this scam, but the telling of this story was a nice, tidy package and a jaw dropping collection of criminal ideas -- all themes many of us have heard recently from some of the stock scammers out there...
It's like a handful of the really bad stock promotion operators bought the same playbook. And guess what? They didn't have to pay for it. What these crooks did is out there in all its glory on the internet. The scammed blabbed in detail how they were conned, how much money they sent, and their angst after the fact. They posted links to all the sordid details on web sites they set up to discuss how they were scammed.
There are many web site hits for "Greater Ministries International" -- I did a quick Yahoo search it was about a thousand. I'm sure you heard of it. But the show is a must see, imo.
