Thanks Eric - there seems to be things which make preferred shares not Qualified Dividends.

Fidelity says ALL/PB is not a Qualified Dividend - described as Fixed Rate, then Floating Rate.

while Fidelity says MET/PF is a Qualified Dividend - described as Plain Vanilla Fixed Coupon.

and not surprisingly all Public Storage preferred shares are not Qualified Dividends, just like their common shares being a REIT.


A lot these bank preferred shares resemble the sort of "gaming certificates" Citibank Australia used to issue, with wild terms like 8.5% interest each month that LIBOR remains withing a certain range, but 0% if LIBOR declined above the range or fell below.
