Maltese Falcon is talking about the counterfeit shares ... meaning there is no borrow.
If I was sold a counterfeit share, I can't really vote it because it doesn't exist.
So if masses of us are holding counterfeit shares, then when we vote, the numbers shouldn't match up with what the company is showing we hold. Logically, I'd think, that the vote count should register as much higher than the float.
Unless the MMs and their affiliates can somehow hold on to and trade the counterfeits amongst themselves with the sole purpose of bringing down the share price to make money with the borrowed shares?
