Excellent piece by Angela Durrant that offers many lessons not only for #nickel but also #lithium and #recycling.
Current dialogue & government policy is centered on building refining capacity outside of China but what are we doing to invest in process technology & retain engineering capability?
What China has achieved in #HPAL in the last few years is nothing short of extraordinary. They’ve developed a blueprint to design, build, operate and replicate HPAL plants, slashing costs and reducing execution risk.
As earlier generation HPAL projects struggled with cost overruns and reaching nameplate capacity, Western Ni producers are shying away from new investments (with the exception of #Eramet) and as a result, we run the risk of losing this valuable know-how.
Just because a process flowsheet is “conventional” or “standard” doesn’t make it easy. Mastering hydromet processing at commercial scale and consistently producing battery-grade raw materials will define our success in achieving true independence from a Chinese supply chain.
