The key word here is conservative. Clinton was, on the basis of the legislation he signed into law under his presidency, NAFTA, Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act, Commodity Futures Modernization Act, etc, very conservative. Republicans and their handlers got what they wanted. Political party labels mean nothing these days. Actions do.
