Remember, not only does a company vet it's new appointees and hires.
The new appointees and hires also take a good hard look at the co..
Obviously, they don't want to harm their own reputation by associating with a company that hasn't much hope of making progress (to put it mildly), so they don't sign on unless they see where they can either help or, better yet, make a big splash.
My guess is, given the reps these two have behind them, they're looking to make a very big splash and they have some idea of how they can do it, or else they would not be here.
