It's fairly simple...

MJ has always grown with the cycle of nature....Spring to Fall...(6 to 7 months from seed to harvest).

Spring begins the longer daylight hours, and then as the year progresses into late summer the daylight hours begin to decrease. This triggers the female MJ plant to begin producing it's flowers to be pollinated by the males.. (Male MJ plants are removed after they show their sex in roughly 6 weeks from seed, that's unless the person growing wants more seeds). People DON'T like seeds in their weed!! LOL

Now, a while back a guy created the "Lowryder" MJ plant...AKA, Autoflowering MJ plant.

This allowed the grower to produce a harvest from seed in roughly 10 to 12 weeks. The problem is the autoflower doesn't produce nearly the amount of a regular female MJ plant because the veg time is very short. They have increased the output of autoflowers as of late, but it still doesn't compare to the the real deal.

They even have feminized seeds now days, which is very smart for someone growing for profit...no one wants to plant unknown sexed seeds, and then have to care for them for 6 weeks just to rip them up if they are males.

Also, you can grow a non-autoflowering MJ plant from seed to harvest under 12/12 and it will still produce within about 10 to 12 weeks, but WHY? The reason the whole autoflower started is because growing MJ was illegal and growers wanted small, undetectable MJ plants for outside or small inside grows...AKA...stealth growing.

Hope that helps some...
