GSMA and Intel announce initiative to facilitate GSM adoption in laptops
Feb 16, 2006 (WORLDWIDE COMPUTER PRODUCTS NEWS via COMTEX) -- At the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the GSM Association (GSMA), a trade association representing over 680 GSM mobile phone operators, and IT technology manufacturer, Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) announced an initiative to facilitate the adoption of the GSM family of technologies in laptop computers.
The GSMA and Intel reportedly plan to collaborate to develop guidelines for integrating 3G modems and SIM cards into laptop computers, enabling automatic connection to both 3GSM networks and Wi-Fi networks, using the same SIM card technology as currently used by mobile phones.
GSMA's goal is to make sure that in future every notebook will be SIM ready, said the CEO of the GSM Association, adding that laptops with in-built 3GSM connectivity will enable PC users to enjoy seamless access to mobile broadband wireless services with secure authentication.
