not exactly in flames. a majority voted for it, 54 votes, but couldn't pass the republican minority's obstruction of threatened filibuster which needed 60 votes.
Since nearly 90% of the american public was for the background checks, and 90% of the republicans voted against it, it may tip a few of the greedschlocks out in 2014. The people did not get to speak through their senators, in such a blatant fashion that it might cost them. so no, it wasn't a resounding defeat at all, just showed how hamstrung congress is.
