Sharp makes displays in general. If it is still not clear why that's relevant to Intel, let me explain.

Intel said they wanted to spend $300 million on Ultrabooks. It's not a marketing fund, but investments on companies that enable Ultrabooks to happen. Yes, Sharp investment is far more than $300 million alone. But that is still relevant.

Have you heard of Apple trying to go against component manufacturers for making Ultrabooks? Whether that rumor is true or not, Intel's investment allows that everyone can get their share. So Ultrabooks manufacturers won't be running out of display supplies. Intel is also investing for larger touchscreen displays, say on the laptop size. That will allow small(mostly) companies to gain their foot on the ground, which will increase volumes and make prices go down.

Sharp is one of the many companies Intel is investing in, though it seems the largest directly related to Ultrabooks so far.
