Your take on the gagged TA subject is spot on. In fact this particular outfit http://www.transferonline.com/IssuerServices/TransferAgentRegistrar has as it's own policy to NOT release ANY information to the public whether or not you hold shares. They claim it is best practices. What a hoot. So if you use these miscreants you don't have to gag them. They gag themselves and they are not the only TA with this policy.
