With me it was numbers that made my brain hurt .... all those countries were attacked by the yew ess of eh ... in the case of Chile, there was more to it than an overthrow, it was a series of murders, part of which is called la Caravana de Muerte, and while largely planned in 1972 [read Hitchens on Kissinger] it took place in '73
In Indochina [much more to it than Viet Nam], the partisan forces who helped to shake off the japanese empire had been given assurances of help with their independences following the struggle .... come 1945 however, the french under de Gaulle decided to re-establish their empire, and Truman assisted them for short-sighted political reasons
Come 1954, the french are defeated at Dien Bien Phu, though their forces there are bolstered by considerable ex-Waffen SS from a number of nationalities including but not limited to french, german, hungarian, romanian, ukrainian, and croatian .... but they're toast, the french are out of it then, Viet Nam is split along a cease-fire line and a deal is struck that there will be free elections in 1956
Come 1956, and Eisenhower says no elections, though India Poland and Canada on the Tripartite commission all agree that the deal should be upheld, largely because hey, a deal is a deal, also the great majority of population wanted both elections and reunification ..... but Ike says no, so no elections, corrupt south V.N. regime continues [not that that of north V.N. was superior, mind you, just more popular among the people] ... and what is more significant, the corrupt [and brutal] south vietnamese regime is supported by the US, both economic and military aid, continually escalating until the Kennedy administration, and through it, then really taking off under LBJ to where at one point there were over half a million US military in the country
Much is made of the fifty-eight thousands US military killed, well near half of them were from 'friendly fire', and during the war somewhere between two and a half and three and a half millions of indochinese are killed [of course they don't count for much do they] [same as nicaragüenses if you really think about it] [i mean, who the hell cares as long as gas doesn't go up]
Homework question for you, if you'd like to work on your feel of history - The leader of which nation made the following quote? -
'The acquisition of Canada ... is a mere matter of marching '
