Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to announce its long-awaited AMD-powered Galaxy line of servers next week, adding a new set of products to one of the fastest-growing parts of its business.
The new servers will run on Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Opteron processors, rather than Sun's proprietary Sparc chips. The industry-standard technology, known as x86, is the fastest growing platform for servers.
Galaxy is expected to beef up Sun's portfolio in this fast-growing market for lower-end servers.
Sun's sales of Opteron-based servers grew rapidly during the second quarter, according to Gartner Inc., which tracks technology sales.
Although the company's x86 sales remain well behind those at IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., it shipped 88 percent more of the units than last year.
The revenue it generated from those shipments almost tripled from last year.
