Kenco, The patent office is awarding patents to the first inventor to file an application with the U.S. patent office for an invention. It's called first to file which protects an invention from others trying to patent the same idea. It's best to file for a patents quickly.

I agree, there is no protection from a third party coping your idea until after the patent is granted.
