You probably was not getting a very good signal from the the 3G and your browser wasn't completely loading the page. When this happens some of the background images that didn't get loaded show up as X's or the browser may substitute another image like the magnifying glass. That would be my guess?
I think you said you already cleared your cache? Found this about how to make sure your doing a full reboot and not just a restart:
