DD 7/2/05: MOBL needs to get real serious about WIMAX and soon -- the competition is. WIMAX technology is rolling out second half 2005 and will be a killer application in city-wide broadband wireless. Big players are getting into position. MOBL recently joined the WIMAX Forum... http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050607/fltu007.html?.v=11

Among roughly 1,900 attendees at the WCA show were small WiMax specialists like Alvarion (ALVR ) and Airspan Networks (AIRN), as well as large firms that are adding WiMax to their cellular portfolios, including Alcatel (ALA), Motorola (MOT) and Sprint (FON)... WiMax will have more bandwidth than the fastest third-generation cellular technologies...

AT&T, Nextel and Sprint are testing wireless broadband networks around cities like Atlanta and Washington. These trials are examining alternative high-throughput wireless technologies, but WiMax is the clear favorite. City councils in London are promoting WiMax, and riders on the express train to Brighton can use a pre-standard WiMax connection to surf the 'Net at 100 miles per hour. Tokyo will have a WiMax network by year-end.

WiMax is already part of the five-year plans of large phone companies like the British Telecom unit of BT Group (BT) and the T-Mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT). Most incumbent suppliers of cellular infrastructure are at least dabbling. LM Ericsson (ERICY) became the latest recruit last week, as it announced plans to resell gear made by Airspan. These developments make me wonder if WiMax will just become another product offering of existing wireless giants, or will it support a new cohort of WiMax specialists?
