Automakers like General Motors GM opened higher today, but have since pared gains.

U.S. Department of Commerce said retail rose over 1 percent last month, as consumers spent mostly on automobiles, clothing and other household properties. Car sales showed the strongest growth, with Americans spending 3.6 percent more in September.
