Patlee-Re: Oil Companies.

>"We wouldn't need new tariffs, as there are already taxes on about everything coming into this country."<

I would have to know what the fed. govts. budget is and how much revenue is generated by import duties before I could even begin to address this issue realistically.

>"Would a private company be able to provide the same service as the FAA, and if so could they do it more efficiently and cheaper? Most likely, yes. The problem is that the government is not the best source of controlling everyday life. That is still better left to the states and the people."<

Yeah, if you are comfortable with the fox watching the henhouse. After the first crash because of kick back or neglience, liability insurance would probably drive ticket cost through the roof though.

"Most people who vote in this country do so because of something that a politician has promised them, whether its new roads, more social programs, or more schools. Why else do you think the democratic ticket is still so popular?"

I don't know about most people but at this point I don't believe one single thing uttered by any politicition, irregardless of thier party affilitation.
I think the democratic party is popular and won the popular vote in the last Presidential election because the vast majority of the dems. vote for the future of the country as a whole and not just for thier self fullfilling needs at the moment. We are not all broke and on welfare. There are a heap O folks who make over six figures a year that vote thier concience.

>"Just the income tax reductions would not be enough. There are federal taxes on almost everything we buy though. Gas would be about 30-40 cents cheaper per gallon without them, cigarettes would be about 50 cents a pack, and beer and wine would be much cheaper without the 'sin tax' on them."<

Hey. I'm almost with you on this one Pat. Bless me father for I have sinned, and probably will some more. I think the logic is that the smokers and drinkers will require more medicare money so they should contribute more. On the other hand they are going to die sooner so they won't be quite the burden on social security. If they'd legalize pot and sell it at cost plus a 500% tax I could save a lot O money and they coul make a lot O money. Oh, but that would put the dealer out of business and that just wouldn't work.
As far as the gas tax goes, I would be open to an INCREASE if I had some assurances as to how the revenues were going to be spent.
