WI-LAN, Inc. (WILN) acquires rights to patent portfolios and licenses patent portfolios for its own benefit and on behalf of various business partners.

The company owns the rights to over 1,300 patents or applications for patents and has licensed patents to companies that sell products utilizing Wi-Fi, WiMAX, LTE, CDMA, DSL, DOCSIS, Bluetooth, and V-Chip technologies, among others.


Licenses are typically granted over a fixed period of time, and licensees pay license fees on a pro-rata quarterly basis. The company has over 240 licensees, including recently signed agreements with Cisco, Intel, Broadcom, and Marvell.

Some of these recent agreements resolved pending litigation, which the company believes will result in lower litigation expense over the near-term, which should help drive earnings growth.

The company plans to grow its patent portfolio through patent acquisitions, license partnerships, and corporate mergers and acquisitions.

In the company’s latest reported first quarter, sales increased approximately 65% to $26.3 million from $15.9 million in the first quarter of last year.

WI-LAN reported earnings per share of $0.05 in the latest reported first quarter versus $0.01 in the same quarter of last year.
