not sure how the intellectual rights are shared at KAUST, but like how you think. Have long thought collabration of technology/scientists/Governments/Universities overlap one another.
More direct the line of logic, the better the chance of connecting concrete facts imo. GJ seems a good starting point as he is world renown and is connected to QTMM.
Rice/Cornell/JETRO were also intersection points....don't know for sure, but seemed on the surface to be a good maybe.
will try to look a little deeper later, (have folks coming in). Hope you continue to investigate your line of thought.

Different pov tend to compliment one another when working towards a common objective. The diversity of thought is one of the things that help keep this board vibrant.
