Weekly Country Western Revival Sunday, 09 January 2011 17:17

Written by : Karen Y. Lu

Even though football is coming to an end, Sunday nights are still happening in Henderson. Local classic country band, Whiskey Revival, plays each Sunday evening in the unexpectedly modern and elegant Fortune Club at Club Fortune Casino.

If you like your country western music sung by artists named Hank and Patsy and you don’t know any country western music artists named Garth or Faith, then Whiskey Revival fits you like your favorite pair of Wranglers. A night with this lively six-member band is as close to a night in an authentic honky tonk on the side of a road in rural Texas as we get in southern Nevada. The band plays what they call “outlaw country” and keeps to classic numbers that have not been watered down by the neo-traditional movement of the 80’s started by George Strait and influenced by Urban Cowboy.

On a recent night, Whiskey Revival played to a full crowd of loyal fans. With even just the first few twangs from the pedal steel guitar, blood pressures were lowered and smiles were raised around the lounge. “Amos Moses,” “Whiskey River” and “Fujiyama Mama” were particularly rollicking. And the band is just as pleasing with slow ballads: “Bird On A Wire” and “Faded Love” were standouts and got couples two-stepping on the dance floor. “Sleepwalk” which features the pedal steel guitar was an extra special treat and, as the evening wound down, Kenny Rogers’ “Ruby” was an inspired choice.

Band boss Andy Morris is the colorful founder of the band and is part of a three-generation Henderson family. His father, Barry Morris, also performed around town in acts such as Flashbacks for over twenty years. Paige Overton is the only woman in the band. Paige not only sounds like Patsy Cline, but she also looks like a modern day Vargas Girl with her raven hair, fair skin and dark red lips. Paige’s entire family often attends her performances and her mom Michelle Overton owns the Salon Salon hair studio at the corner of Windmill and Pecos. Thom Ferman is the dedicated pedal steel guitar player who brings the exquisitely heartbreaking twang to the classic numbers. Handsome baby-faced guitar player Matt James, sweetly sheepish bass player Alex LeCavalier and non-conformist Jon Whisenant the percussionist are all equally talented and round out this hard-working band.

Club Fortune Casino does a nice job of hosting from the bar right outside the lounge by offering specials such as $2 Corona bottles and $1.75 Blue Moon drafts. So until your next pilgrimage to the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield or to Willie Nelson’s next Fourth of July Picnic in Fort Worth, keep your boots tapping with this “rootin tootin” band. Whiskey Revival plays in the Fortune Lounge inside Club Fortune Casino (725 South Racetrack Road) from 5:00-9:00 each Sunday. There is no cover charge.
