Eastern Ontario Gold Belt

Highway #7 between Madoc and Kaladar crosses a rock formation trending northeast-southwest which contain volcanic, metavolcanic and metasedimentary components collectively known as the Eastern Ontario Gold Belt. This tongue- shaped belt of rock is between 2 and 7 miles wide and upwards of 25 miles long.

Gold Mining Activity In Madoc Area - Eastern Ontario

These formations hosted more than 100 small gold mines, prospects and occurrences, none of which ever became a commercial success in spite of the fact that thousands of ounces of gold were removed from these deposits over a 75 year period. Many of the more dramatic discoveries date back to the late 1800's which predate many of the mine activity reports and on-site investigations now required by government regulation.

Early government records frequently note that a mine was worked by "Unknown Operators" and produced an "unknown" amount of gold. Local stories passed down by word of mouth often mention small "whisky kegs" full of gold that were so heavy that a mule could only carry two of them at a time. Of the gold mines and gold prospects on record, Such is the stuff dreams are made of.

Madoc Mining is part of a recent trend in the mining industry toward small scale operations whose profitability is in fair part due to the absence of expensive offices and debt-loaded capital equipment costs. Typically, this requires clearly defined objectives and highly efficient ore recovery techniques using leased equipment, and if done carefully, an operation of this nature can commercialize many of the smaller deposits passed over by the big guys.
