Teradyne reports wider loss, warns of downsizing

BOSTON, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Teradyne Inc. (NYSE:TER - News), a maker of semiconductor testing equipment, reported a wider quarterly net loss from a year ago and warned that it would need to cut the size of its business.
In the third quarter ended Sept. 29, Teradyne said it had a net loss of $166.8 million, or 91 cents a share, compared to a net loss of $103.4 million, or 59 cents, a year ago. Net sales rose to $330.7 million from $249.4 million a year earlier, and net bookings were $231.5 million.

Excluding special charges, Teradyne said it lost $49.9 million, or 27 cents a share.

Teradyne said it expected fourth-quarter sales of between $310 million and $340 million, with a loss of between 19 cents and 25 cents a share. Analysts on average were expecting a fourth quarter loss of 23 cents a share.
