While you're on point to be cautious here, it is not uncommon for major shareholders to step down from administrative positions as they seek a more relaxed lifestyle in retirement. I, of course, do not know the man personally so I cannot speak for him, but I would imagine that he simply wishes to be involved with the company (and his patents/inventions) on some level.
