Stinky you don't need to quote plumbing code to me, I know it like the back of my hand but thanks for trying. I know what a minimum main should be and that it has branches off it, plumbing 101.

Pipe size does matter to the units operation if the whole house unit comes supplied with 1/2" connections the unit won't be operating because it won't be installed as per code. I know what you're saying though, it just doesn't make sense in the real world.
