That's how it works. The market makers live by buying at the bid and selling at the ask. Just like you want to do. But you can't do it because you are the retail investor. They don't fill your order until the trade is favorable to them. It's just the way it works.

It is impossible to beat the market makers on a thinly traded issue when the spread between bid-ask is 20 to 25% of the total value.
