The real magic of Centrino is that Intel and IBM went around to the operators and got them to solve the interoperability issues that existed with 802.

Intel also used lots of Centrino promotion $$ to grow the availability of hotspots. It is not an accident that all those airports in the US rolled out hotspots in public areas at complete with Centrino banners at the same time as the Centrino launch.

The creation of a wireless infrastructure greatly increased the demand for 802 capability in laptops. Wireless capability quickly became a must have feature in laptops instead of an option. Yes, Intel filled much of the demand but all sources benefitted from Intel's work in developing the infrastructure as the pie became bigger.
