Commentary is not "news" nor is accurate information per se. News is defined by speed of information delivery. Newspaper was the speedster when the competition was books. I worked in the newspaper industry decades ago. In the age of internet, where even encyclopedia entries can be changed to reflect the death of a person quicker than the next day's newspaper comes out, the newspaper is dead. The fact that internet is faster than newspaper also means the internet entry can deliver corrections and updates faster.
As for "survive," well, if they need governmetn subsidies, they are certainly not surviving on their own.
