PRO was incorporated in January 1999 to take over the Process Technologies activities of ORTECH Corporation (Formerly Ontario Research Foundation, originally established in 1928) under the privatization scheme of the Ontario Government.

The mandate of PRO is to continue the research and development work carried on by the Process Technology group of ORTECH Corporation, while exploring, developing and commercializing innovative solutions in areas including Cleantech and Renewable Energy.

PRO serves the needs of Canadian and international companies, in partnership with academic and governmental agencies and organizations as well as primary leaders in the industry. We are also proud to offer our facilities to smaller, specialized businesses.

Case Studies

Renewable Energy

Solar energy is at the forefront of sustainable energy and with the production of more efficient and economical solar panels their use has been globally adopted. Rice husks, traditionally a waste material, are now being used as a precursor for silicon in solar panels. PRO is harnessing this waste material by developing a process solution in partnership with researchers at the University of Toronto to convert rice husks to solar grade silicon. A highly efficient and novel processing technique is being investigated utilizing a cyclonic fluidized bed to obtain a silicon precursor that has physical and chemical properties ideally suited to our patented chloride leach technology to produce highly pure silicon.

Production of Solar Grade Silicon from Rice Husk Ash

As the demand for energy grows dramatically and sources of fossil fuel deplete, considerable attention is being paid to the production of renewable energy such as solar energy. This has resulted in a booming photo-voltaic (PV) industry growing at a dramatic rate of 20-30 % per year. The use of higher purity semiconductor-grade silicon increases the price of solar cells. Process Research Ortech is developing a process to produce high purity silicon for solar cell fabrication starting from rice husk ash.

Energy From Biomass

Rice Husk is a waste material that can be used as a biomass source and is available in large quantities in developing Asian countries such as India. Current methods of burning rice husks produce rice husk ash (RHA) that must be environmentally disposed of. PRO in collaboration with Torftech have explored a novel processing technique to combust rice husk as a biomass energy source utilizing the TORBED® process reactor. The resulting RHA, due to the nature of the combustion in the TORBED, possesses superior physical characteristics that make it suitable as a replacement material for expensive silica fume currently used in the production of high strength concrete. This lateral thinking has produced a carbon neutral energy source for developing countries as well as a valuable by-product in the process

The Torftech group of companies develop, licence and provide the TORBED* process reactor technology to a wide range of industries.

Our technologies have revolutionised:
•Energy production from biomass, ‘wastes’ and solid fuels
•Regeneration, recovery and manufacture of catalysts
•Production of industrial minerals
•Precision processing of solid food products

The ability of TORBED reactors to handle wide variations in feed shape, size and quality is being applied to the controlled combustion and gasification of a variety of materials including carbon, shredded wood waste, organics and hydrocarbons.

Pilot plant facilities are available for test, development and demonstration purposes in Canada and in Europe.

The Canadian Pilot plant facility has a high temperature 400mm diameter ceramic COMPACT BED TORBED reactor, a 400mm diameter s/s alloy EXPANDED BED TORBED reactor and a 400mm diameter electric TORBED FOOD PROCESSOR.

Current Activities

JWT is pleased to announce that it has signed an exclusive worldwide license agreement with Torftech Limited and its subsidiary Torftech Canada Inc. for the exploitation of its TORBED® *reactor technology (toroidal fluidized bed technology) for processing ventilation air methane (VAM).

The technology can be applied to a wide range of methane sources such as abandoned mine methane (AMM), gob gas and coal mine methane (CMM). The aim is to mitigate the emissions of green house gases and to recover energy and carbon credits.

JWT has also been evaluating the reduction of carbon from power station fly ash for recovery of energy and development of recyclable ash for the cement & construction industry.

JWT is an equity partner with Tetronics in a new venture--PLASMA GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGIES, INC in Quebec, Canada.

Evaluations of the use of high temperature processing of wastes, containing organic or oil fractions, have indicated attractive process routes for production of high grade synthetic gas, with simultaneous detoxification of the waste, recovery of metals and production of inert ceramic materials.

The synthetic gas may be used for alternative power generation or as a feedstock for other processes. Combined with waste heat recovery, overall efficiencies can be a substantial improvement on typical steam turbine cycles.
