Joey, HailMary, CombJelly, I know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but this is getting quite extreme! It seems that most anything that AMD innovates is soon imitated by Intel.

What a reversal over the past five years!

Now it is dual cores, moved up to compete with expected AMD product next year.

We have some further clues on the new schedules from this article:

Intel Corp. is canceling the next generation of its desktop and server chips as it moves up its schedule for releasing processors with two cores on a single piece of silicon.
...
However, given the work done by its engineers, Intel will be able to accelerate its schedule for releasing dual-core processors, making Tejas and Jayhawk unnecessary, said Intel spokesman Bill Kircos.
...
Now Intel will have dual-core chips in its entire line of processors by the end of 2005, Kircos said.

So they are speaking to the point that Engineering has been working on this for a while. Notably missing from the report is iAMD64, but there was another article posted today in which Bill Gates says that 64-bit computing will be mainstream next year. He signalled, not too subtly, that vendors should get their 64-bit drivers ready.

(Of course drivers get qualified on you-know-who! Intel will have to keep very AMD compatible. wink

The evidence is mounting that each of those dual cores will be 64-bit, and that Intel is only cancelling NetBurst now that they are seeing good progress from Engineering.

Still, given the usual slips that happen, it is likely that AMD will be the main show in the 64-bit town through next year. It is unlikely that Intel will have product available in quantity for the 2005 Q3 or Q4 selling seasons.
