Everything you point out about the disadvantages of using foundries and moving to the fabless design house model for AMD is true. But given that AMD does not have adequate funding to build a fab what other choice does AMD have if it wants to continue in the processor business?

AMD has managed to place itself in a horrible position because of its many failures. The use of foundries is the least bad of the very bad and few choices available. But at least it offers survival for a few more years.

Note that AMD's entire GPU business is based on the foundry business model.
