AT&T offers integrated wireless and wireline plans
AT&T moves closer to fixed-mobile convergence
Convergence & VoIP Newsletter By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick, Network World, 04/23/07

AT&T last week took a step to further the cause of fixed-mobile convergence in the enterprise by announcing new wireless plans and mobility solutions for businesses. The company will offer integrated wireless and wireline plans through a unified sales force following the company’s complete ownership of Cingular, acquired when the company bought BellSouth late last year.

In addition, AT&T plans to offer customers a single contract for its full suite of wireless and wireline services and AT&T customers will be able to receive price discounts based on a customer’s total spend for both wireless and wireline services. Ultimately, “business customers will be able to order, monitor and manage all of their wireline and wireless services and devices from the AT&T BusinessDirect customer portal” according to the company’s statement.

Customers who buy both AT&T services can get “on-net pricing for wireline-to-wireless calling, which means that a customer’s wireline calls will receive a special on net rate when calling AT&T-provided wireless or wireline business users.”

AT&T will also provide cellular access to the corporate VPN, with the option to include cellular data access. With this option, remote or mobile workers can use either a Wi-Fi connection or AT&T’s wireless data service to access their company’s VPN. The option can also be expanded to provide a back-up service in case the campus wireline connection is interrupted.

Our analysis: While these announcements are more about the business relationships between AT&T and their clients as opposed to a new fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) technology or feature integration, they are nonetheless important because they are evidence of AT&T’s commitment to bring together wireless and wireline services integration and because they will provide a friendlier (and perhaps cheaper) FMC business environment for AT&T’s enterprise customers.
