Achievement enabled by plasmonics! Imagine transmitting 1 terabit per second through the air, from the top of the Swiss Alps (Jungfraujoch, 3450 m above sea level) down to the flatlands near Bern.
That’s exactly what the pioneering team around ETH Zürich (Institute of Electromagnetic Fields) and industry veterans from ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, DOTA (CentraleSupélec - Paris-Saclay University Research Center), LNE-SYRTE, CNRS, Thales Alenia Space in Switzerland & France, accomplished with a single free-space optical (FSO) channel using high-order modulation and advanced adaptive optics.
FSO is a growing topic in industry, as not all communication can happen on fiber or RF. Therefore the relevance of the 2023 publication https://lnkd.in/e-ZnFvsE is rising.
