Same issues discussed in ND in the 1970's with oil.

Some farmers did not want the oil company on their land they wanted to save their oil. The oil company would lease the land next to that land with large oil reservers and start pumping.

That is also when I first heard of diaginal drilling. It became a heated topic with adults that spilled over to the kids in school as well.

Now days there is directional drilling that slumberger uses. Slumberger is hooked up with pemif and Energysources in Nevada.

I thought about it long ago. I looked into the rules, it/they vary from state to state and federal rules for federal land..
