They are all real shares for those that own them, it's up to the Brokerage Firms to make sure you have what you bought, they loaned out your shares to be shorted. They are the ones in trouble.

Brokerage Firms knew that they were loaning out shares that had been previously shorted, to boot, they made a ton of money doing so; now it's time for them to call in all shorted shares. This happens all the time, the rub with AMC, many here think that there are billions of shorted outstanding shares, if they are right, there will be a squeeze the likes of which the Markets have never seen, soon too, the shorts HAVE to buy back the naked shorted shares when the Brokerage Firms calls and tells them to cover, or they will do it for them. Furthermore, they won't care what price they are paying for the shares is.

On top of all that, the CEO of AMC has put a time frame on when the shares have to be bought back, so hold on tight, all longs will be alright, there will be blood in the street; but it won't be yours.
