Key slides from this morning webinar “How much does green hydrogen cost, and how much will it cost in 2030 and 2050?”

The answer is straightforward: “It depends.”

It depends on the cost of renewable energy, on the technology progress, on the scale, on the country, on distribution costs and on lots of other things.

So people keep on asking: “But how much does it cost now?”

Some people say: “It’s cheaper than natural gas today.”

We read that quite often in the last weeks. The truth is: Green Hydrogen, produced on PowerPoint slides in theoretical political and fiscal situations and with technology that is not available at this scale yet might be cheaper than natural gas that is already flowing in our pipes today.

Those people keep on asking: “I have read about Green Hydrogen for $ 1.50 or $ 2.00. Is that real? Is it a realistic goal and if yes, when will we be there?”

The answer, again, is: “It depends.” While it is certainly good to be ambitious, we should not forget that it’s still a long, long way to get there. A lot of progress in all fields is needed.

“Ok, I got that. But how much? Here and now.”

Here’s the final answer: Join our webinar on Wednesday, August 3, 10 am Berlin (5pm Beijing, 4am New York) to find it out.

Our guest is John Poljak, founder of keynumbers.com, a company offering tools to do “back of the envelope” calculations for the energy transition. We have discussed all kinds of questions with John in the past, and with his tools he is able to provide a very good estimate to almost every question in a few minutes.

“How much will Green Hydrogen cost in 2037 with 60% of CAPEX reduction, 12% efficiency gain, 4 Cents of electricity cost and 27 dollars for blue collar workers?”

“How much will a kWh of electricity produced from Green Hydrogen in a 50 MW gas peaker plant in Australia cost in 2028?”

“What is the maximum price per kW of fuel cell we can afford to stay below 12 cents per kWh if the hydrogen was produced with 5 cents per kWh in an electrolyzer with 62% efficiency?
