The simpler explanation is usually the way to go (especially when compared to an unlikely one): They believe the amyloid plaque dogma so strongly they were willing to cheat to have it win out. They were not farsighted chess players, but blinded believers in the end over the means. They didn't imagine that today people would be calling for their professional heads.
