Everything I've read -- and I read a lot about stocks -- suggests dividend capture doesn't work. A few years ago I followed two obscure mutual funds that claimed to use dividend capture to juice their yields. Those funds eventually shut down when their performance greatly lagged the S&P. The funds were always vague about their exact methods, claiming it was "proprietary."

I see inexperienced, yield hungry retirees trying div capture with NGL Energy and other high yielding plays by trading in and out around dividend dates. Eventually they give up on that.
