I have to tell you a story about spelling, Dan.
When I was teaching biology this actually happened.
The test question following the unit on paleontology was, Define the word fossil.
I marked a student's answer wrong. He was arguing that he had simply misspelled a word and should get full credit. I told him that ordinarily he might be right, but his spelling had completely changed the meaning, and I could not give him credit. As he continued to argue, I told him I would leave it up to the class, and wrote his definition on the chalk board:
"Fossil- an impression of an orgasm preserved on a rock."
When the class stopped laughing, he said, "I guess I don't get credit, right?"
