In a truly blinded trial I agree, the outcome is often in doubt. This trial would have been truly blinded if the one third who started on the placebo remained on it. We know they didn't and in fact about 90% of the control group crossed over. I'm guessing that the roughly 10 or so that didn't cross over passed away before they could, but even if one or two turn up among the survivors, the overwhelming benefit will be from the vaccine.

I don't like blinded trials where control groups are established on the SOC when data is well established for the SOC. I believe all who volunteer should get the experimental treatment. Effectively that's happened in this trial with crossovers, the result isn't a mystery, only the details are. We know a lot of people are alive or have lived for 5 years or longer, we know on the SOC they wouldn't be. End of story.
