That's what I thought too when I was having my back and forth yesterday with another poster. I checked with a public company CFO I know very well and she confirmed that the number of shares on the date of the filing are outstanding on that date and NOT as of quarter / year end.

If you don't believe me check a few random previous 10-Qs. (I did) The number on the first page is different than the number on the balance sheet as of the quarter end.

Hopefully this can put this debate to rest.
