Dr. Michael Cooney is Now a VA Hospital In-Network Provider

February 28, 2020

Veterans should contact their VA primary care doctor for a referral

Veterans with medication and treatment-resistant chronic pain are now fully covered to have Calmare Therapy, with a written referral from a V.A. physician.

Dr. Michael Cooney, clinical director, Calmare Therapy NJ USA, located in Rutherford, NJ, is a VA-approved, in-network provider of Calmare scrambler therapy (CPT Code 0278T), an FDA-cleared, non-invasive therapy to combat chronic nerve pain as a result of injury, surgery or disease.

The four branches of the U.S. Military have been using scrambler therapy since 2011, increasing the number of Calmare MC-5A devices at its hospitals, including the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

“The U.S. Military was one of the first treatment centers to recognize Calmare’s capacity to substantially reduce or eliminate nerve pain without using invasive procedures, needles, medications or surgeries,” explains Dr. Cooney.

“As an in-network provider, we can help many veterans reduce neuropathic pain, especially those for whom medications and other traditional pain management therapies have failed to control their pain.”
How the Calmare Device Works Painlessly to Reduce Neuropathy

The FDA-cleared MC-5A scrambler therapy device (the brand name is Calmare) works by sending a “no-pain” signal through strategically-placed electrodes on the patient’s skin.

These signals override the native pain message, reducing the pain intensity and often offering immediate pain relief.

The long-term success achievements—at no added risk to the soldier–has made it an effective weapon against the “War on Pain.”

Calmare has no side effects and is painless to undergo.

While the treatment does not work for everyone, it has achieved am 80% success rate overall. Dr. Cooney has successfully treated nearly 1,000 patients since he underwent training to use the MC-5A device in 2010.

“Time and again, we have seen the Calmare device help people regain control of their lives and resume a healthy quality-of-life,” Dr. Cooney notes. “We have seen many people regain independent mobility after arriving at our clinic using wheelchairs, walkers or canes.”

Dr. Cooney says the success of the scrambler therapy device has been the highlight of his 35-year career in pain management.
