DTC is the record keeper for the shares. Cede & Co. is their nominee or street name used to endorse the physical security. As trades are made and settled, DTC transfers shares from one account to another account to maintain the books. It speeds up the clearing process. The brokers keep the records for who owns their shares at DTC.
