“Social inflation” is a euphemism in the casualty-insurance industry that refers to the rising cost of jury awards in civil lawsuits:

For the second quarter in a row, Travelers Cos. has spooked the market by again warning about what it calls “social inflation,” or an upward creep in jury awards, lawsuits and other pressures that it says are leading to higher claims and losses, particularly in business insurance.
