For a number of reasons.

First, that's not really ML's style. He's not Jobs or Musk who run their companies primarily as marketers. He's the low key academic, he's not going to create a circus.

Second, they needed to put it through the tests and have the numbers to back everything up. It was only this year that they put together devices - that doesn't mean much to prospective buyers until it's been battle tested.

Finally, as any business venture, the science is only half the equation. You could have a perfect product, but if you can't manufacture it in profitable quantities, it's worthless. No big partner/investor is going to bite unless you can show them they can make money. I'm hoping I'm on the same page as ML that they needed to demonstrate manufacturing scalability before they really moved forward pushing out to the big investors. The MZ deal, to me, implies they have a legit workable plan.

I certainly hope I'm right, because that would make my life quite a bit easier ;)
