When you drive down the street in a shiny Maserati, nobody knows you owe a fortune on it and have been playing legal games for years to keep it and the mansion you're also not paying for.

If you live for the envy of those people on the street, and don't care what you have to do to get it, you become like the Foleys.

Appearance is everything.

Also, given that it's been obvious for many years that Foley would wind up in prison for most of the rest of his life (that's what happens when you commit major felonies in plain sight, and especially when you do them from a prison cell), it appears that Foley's calculation that a decade living the high life is worth at least 3 decades in prison.

After all, most of the rest of us will never live in a mansion, and never own a Maserati.

To his mentality, he's had a better life than ordinary people. He feels as if he's "achieved" more than us.
