Gears of War has already sold over a million units worldwide, breaking new sales records around the world.
Last week Microsoft said it expected to reach the million mark by Christmas. The game was released today in New Zealand, two weeks later than other territories.
Microsoft says the results make Gears of War the fastest-selling title over a two-week period in 2006 and the fastest-selling original Xbox game.
On Xbox Live, more than 850,000 unique gamers have engaged in ten million gameplay sessions and unlocked seven million 'achievements' as marked out by the game's developer.
As well as being the top title on Xbox Live, Gears of War has also driven new members to the online gaming service – paid Xbox Live registrations per day have jumped more than 50 per cent since the game's launch.
This weekend Xbox Live Gold level is free for New Zealand gamers with suitable Internet access.
