From personal experience this really works, I think 2 distractions come in play though, 1---remembering to go to God--2---giving up self-control. From being an infant to adulthood we are taught we can do stuff, be independent, so going to God and saying Look here, I need some help is a bit strange to our inner being----but once we learn that God is always there life can be much easier to deal with. Try sharing the good times with God not just the difficult moments, try sharing your daily chores/duties with God, I might add try sharing your hobby with God......
