In order to do so, we need to collect short video clips using the car’s external cameras to learn how to recognize things like lane lines, street signs, and traffic light positions. The more fleet learning of road conditions we are able to do, the better your Tesla’s self-driving ability will become.

Automakers and tech companies are rushing to bring autonomous driving systems to market and accumulating mileage with their test vehicles.

Tesla is taking a different approach by accumulating mileage with its customer fleet through its Autopilot driver assist program.

A new report now estimates that Tesla has accumulated over 1.2 billion miles on Autopilot and more than twice that when accounting for mileage in ‘shadow mode’.

Yes I agree its a cash burning machine and the cars arent the greatest but apple could improve all that and could integrate its services into the car ecosystem. Most importantly though the data collected could be a boost to Apples autonomous project. You dont think Apple would want Tesla charge stations as well? Another service that could, one day, be very lucrative.

I give Tesla credit for having the best range and that to me is the only thing truly appealing for me to ever buy one.
