Ok, where are all those folks who claim "diversity" is our strength?

Mel Greaves has a simple goal in life. He is trying to create a yoghurt-like drink that would stop children from developing leukaemia.The idea might seem eccentric; cancers are not usually defeated so simply. However, Professor Greaves is confident and, given his experience in the field, his ideas are being taken seriously by other cancer researchers.

Based at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, Greaves has been studying childhood leukaemia for three decades. On Friday, it was announced that he had received a knighthood in the New Year honours list for the research he has carried out in the field.“For 30 years I have been obsessed about the reasons why children get leukaemia,” he says. “Now, for the first time, we have an answer to that question – and that means that we can now start thinking about ways to halt it in its tracks. Mel is, as you might expect.... a white dude.

He noted that -- gasp -- leukemia seems to track with affluent societies.

That doesn't make sense. Or does it? He thought it did and it turns out he's right.

First, you need a mutation. That's not affluence-tracked; it just happens.

But the second part is that you must be nice and clean in the first part of your life -- specifically, the first year. Which affluent people are, and less-so tend not to be.

In other words you have to get sick in the first year of your life or you're vulnerable.

Then, when you inevitably get exposed to those germs your immune system blows it and triggers a second mutation that causes leukemia.

So now his task is to figure out exactly what you can be intentionally inundated with as a baby, which will in turn confer immunity because the second event never happens.

Meanwhile the nutjobs went down the road of believing that living near power lines was the cause.

Nope.

Score another one for white dudes, right along with the crapper, mechanical refrigeration and.... yeah.... tampons.
